I bought a 05 mini JCW with a bunch of mods and only 75K miles yesterday and now have a check engine light on . I went and had the code read came up a fuel trim error, I believe it was code 2096. I have 2 question about it, ive read its prob an 02 sensor, are these hard to replace diy ? is the car safe to drive with this code on?
thanks for any input in advance

Hello and Welcome to the club forums!
The O2 sensors usually aren't difficult to do as a diy job. To make the job easier, there is a special socket that allows the wire to be slid through so you can the get the socket completely over the sensor. I highly recommend this tool and you can buy them from auto parts stores (they also rent them for free with a depsoit), it will save a lot of time.
Also, I believe there are 2 O2 sensors, one above the downpipe by the turbo and one further down the exhaust, I believe after the catalytic converter. If you get a straight OEM replacement sensor, these are generally a plug and play install. You literally unscrew it, unplug the wire, plug the wire in to the new one, apply some anti seize compound on the threads, and screw in, done. The hardest part will be accessing it and possibly breaking it free if it is rusted. Once you have replaced the sensors, you can reset your ecu by disconnecting the battery for a while.

On the R53 you can usually get to them with a crescent wrench. It would be the front one. The rear would give you a lazy cat code. Be sure to put anti seize on the threads of the new one but do not get it on the tip.
I would reset the code and drive it to see if it comes back. It might help if we knew what mods have been done to make a diagnosis.
