My lovely 2006 Mini has just over 21,000 miles and D.R. says I need new tires.
Is this typical?
Any recommendations on tires?
Thanks for the input.

For run-flats thats pretty good actually. My main recommendation is DO NOT get new tires from the dealer. you will pay way too much for them. You could always try www.tirerack.com/

I agree. Don't get dealer tires again. In fact I don't like run flats anymore. Although someone at MINITTS: Chicago says you can sell old run flats to racers who want to shave them down for slicks. I made a trip to South Bend to Tire Rack and picked out new rims and tires (Kosei K1 TS with Kumho ECSTA SPTs). Most people buy the AST versions of my tire for all weather conditions and they claim to get more life out of them. I later got Blizzaks on my standard rims for the winter work. Both tires are far far above the standard tires even the performance tires from the dealer and will cost you much less. (Blizzaks were simply the best tires I've ever driven on in the snow...nothing like passing a 4x4 in winter warning conditions) The SPT tires I got for the summer are wearing a lot slower than I thought...probably 3 summers of life out of them unless I start doing some serious track days.

I agree. Neither Taz or I run run flats anymore. We opted for better performance and ride. The only down side is you run the slight risk of a flat with no spare. We both carry Green Slime and a small compressor, just in case.
If you decide you still want run flats, check the Bazar section. There are usually some sets for sale there.

I would also suggest when you get new tires to rotate them at least every 6000 miles or so, that will extend the life. The fronts will wear out pretty quickly.
We have 31,000 miles on one set of OEM tires with rotation.

We have 31,000 miles on one set of OEM tires with rotation. I've got 31k miles on my 2008 R56. It's only 13 months old. The OEM Continental Tires (all season) have held up very well. However, the front tires are in need of replacement. The rear tires still have plenty of treadlife left. I'm thinking about replacing the OEM tires with identical tires (not from the dealership). But, I'm looking at various websites, trying to find a better tire.... and can't find one that looks any better - from a tread life and performance viewpoint. Anybody out there who is really-really happy with their tires - what brand/model?

I recently installed some yokahama ENvigors on mine, they did great in rain and snow and the rie is less jarring yet firm. I've really tested them on the 71st ramp to 465 and 465/65 entrance ramp heading south. They were good buy at tirerack and were delivered and installed by big o off of 37/Fairfield rd.
Would fix-o-flat inflate our tires? Does green slime work? Great idea

I got the ENvigors on mine last week. WAY better ride than the runflats. I have been pleased with them so far. The fix-o-flat would work but you might do better by buying a plug kit and keeping it and a compressor in the car. The fix-o-flat stuff leaves all kind of junk on your rims if I'm not mistaken. I am in the process of buying a whole doughnut and parts kit to put in the boot. Detroittuned has spares mounted for $110, shipping was 13 or 15. Not a bad deal!
