I took my MINI in on Friday to have her first oil change done. While I was there, I had mentioned to Richard about the cold start rattle that I was experiencing. He said that they would do a test to see if I had the problem that I had described. Well about two hours later, I got a call from him and he said that indeed I had the cold start rattle, and that he was glad that I had brought my MINI in when I did. Not sure what he meant by that. So in the mean time, I am driving a loaner MINI from D&R. I will keep you posted on what I find out. I should know more by this coming Tuesday. Bummer...

Just a quick update, as promised... I picked up my MINI yesterday from D&R. They replaced a few different components including the timing chain, chain tensioner, and a crank shaft sprocket. I can tell that the engine runs alot quieter know than it did when I took her in. I did ask Richard about what he had meant about bringing in my MINI when I did and he stated that if I had not done so, it could have much worse concerning the repairs to my engine. I am just glad that my warrenty is still active. By the way, I posted this just in case any one else who has a 2008 MCS and has heard the cold start rattle and is concerned about it as I was.

Mine only does it after a very short run, like pulling in/out of my garage, and then it will buzz and rattle the next morning. I'm going to wait and have them check it out on my upcoming service visit in a couple months.

Mine had done the same thing, she would rattle and buzz for a short amount of time. It became more frequent as time went by. D&R did not charge me for the test (warranty), and mine was bad enough that they didn't have to wait until the engine was "cold" to get the test results. Just be sure to say something to Richard (service adviser) at D&R when you take your MINI in for service, that way it will be on record.

hello, '09 MCS manual sports pkg, sport susp. limited slip diff. Does this condition exist more frequently with or w/out turbo, sports pkg, ECT. or does any body know? Recieved my car mid-June, I've heard this start-up noise probably four times total. It's very infrequent(and you can't mistake it) but I'm extremely concerned.
Also, I've got just over 5K on it, and called to inquire regarding tire rotation (17 in. all weather run-flats), and was told by D&R that the interval was 7.5-10K. (?) really? Just curious what others do.
Regards

Read: Buzz sound when the engine is cold?, in this forum. Take note of reply #5 from oldmgguy. He really gives a lot of details and some links concerning which years are affected. It seems to be that the model years are '07- early '09 turbo engines-the valve train in the non-turbo is different and thus not affected by the cold start rattle. If you believe that you have the cold start rattle, make an appointment to have it tested. It should not cost you anything if it is still under warranty.

I'd rotate your tires every 5k, they will last alot longer. Also you should change your oil every 5k. I've seen a couple turbo's fail and both of them had the oil return line slugged up from the long intervals of oil changes.
As for the noise. Most of the time it's the timing chain tensioner. I've heard ALOT of MINI's doing it. The service repair is to first let the car warm up, if the noise is gone they do nothing. 2nd change the oil, if the noise goes away they do nothing else. If you still have the noise then they'll replace the tensioner.

Had a portion of my tensioner system replaced last year. Problem went away.
Got into the car this afternoon, after it had set in the driveway for about two days.... and it was cold last night.... and I heard the sound again. EEE-gad. I'm only 800 miles before I'm out of warranty. If it does it two more times, I'm taking it in before i hit 36k miles.

hello, Recieved my car mid-June, I've heard this start-up noise probably four times total. It's very infrequent(and you can't mistake it) but I'm extremely concerned. Well, The rattling increased in frequency as well as volume. D&R got the car twice in an effort to recreate the cold start-up rattling noises. The first time it was noted that some noise during a cold start is a normal condition. Really...? The second time D&R was sucessful to recreate the noise - after I had experienced this noise on four consecutive start-up occasions -a particular morning, that same afternoon, the same evening, then the following next-day morning. I suppose they replaced what was needed, as there is little detailed on the work order. I interrogated an SA, but received less info -other than a possible total amount of shop-time involved. I can only imagine what could've been accomplished within "about ten hours" of shop work. All-in-all, I believe that D&R handled the situation extremely well. Could be worse, I guess, harkening back to two prevoius "less-than-fond" experiences with Lucas electrical systems and a couple of MG's. One of them was even a new one. Dissapointed with this example of German engineering, I'm just keeping my fingers crossed from now on... All of this and it JUST turned 10k.

They probably performed the required service bulletin, which means replacing the timing chain tensioner assembly. This involves a lot of work and should take care of the problem.

Wow, performed the required service bulletin, well that's just great...
So, one recent Thursday morning, I experienced a "What the.." "Did I just hear what I thought I heard?" "Na, couldn't be...dealer fixed all that start-up rattle stuff..." moment.
Well, by Saturday, I couldn't get my MINI to NOT perform the cold start rattle (for as long as I wanted the car to do it), whether the car was cold OR NOT!! The car went downhill REAL fast. I took it in to the dealer ASAP, and they pretty much fell all over themselves getting it back to a 'non-rattle start-up' condition AGAIN (for now anyway). Kudos D 'n R., however there was virtually no diagnosis needed.
Just turned 20K on it, and I've had more major problems than all of the 6 Japanese cars I've owned, each with 10 times more miles. My Deutsch/Brit experience is not going as well as I'd hoped, pretty much S/A my '67 Miget and '78 B.
Since I seem to be on a schedule of having this performed every 9-10K, I prepared myself for the next 'episode' by quizzing the SA regarding what the cost would've been if not for the warranty.
I'm out before I throw that much cash into a pretty much brand new car...can't afford it.
I'm reluctant to "Motor On" with this one.
