I took Mrs Peel in this week for a leaking thermostat gasket. While it was there, I asked them to listen for a noise that didn't sound right as it idled. They replaced the crankcase vent hose. It was oil saturated and very flimsy, making a noise like a duck call if you squeezed it. My concern is why would the hose be ruined after 40k miles? Should I be concerned about the amount of oil going into the vent? I don't want problems to start around the time the warranty runs out! Anyone else run into this?

Steve are you a R56 or R53? I can't remember when you got Mrs Peel.

Collapsed hose is due to a failed PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve, which is located on the end of the hose that goes into the valve cover. This is fairly common on R53s, but not very expensive nor hard to do it yourself.

Oops, I missed seeing this earlier. Thanks for the info, I'll check out the PCV.
