I have changed rear pads a couple of times on an R53 but do not know how similar it is. I did some reserch on NAM and found some usful information on how to go about changing after searching the forums.

Brakes are pretty easy on these cars. The only thing that makes the rear pad more challenging is the fact that you need to turn the pistons to retract them rather than just press them in like on the front calipers. You can either borrow a tool from the auto store or go buy a cheapo $15 set at harbor freight.
On my r56 I used akebono euro ceramic pads this last time and have been very satisfied with them. They brake similar to stock and dusting is very minimal. No more black wheels. I went with the akebono s this time because you can get them locally at advance auto, etc.
Way motorworks also has a lot to choose from if you want to order online.
As stated above, there are helpful DIY articles on northamericanmotoring.com.
Good luck.

I have done mine a few times. I always just used needle nose pliers to turn and push the pistons at the same time. It takes a while but it works. I almost always used green stuff pads. They have a better initial bite than stock and don't fade as quickly as stock, with no extra noise and less dust.

Do I need to replace the pad sensor too, since I will be down there?

Do I need to replace the pad sensor too, since I will be down there? Yes, if it has been worn in to (brake service light is on for rear brakes).

I would replace it for general principle. It can crack from all the heat cycles or break when you take it out.

Pads went in just fine, no problems. Only issue was I must have ordered the wrong rear break sensor. That kinda pissed me off. I did end up buying the tool to rotate the piston back into position. It was a whopping $8 at NAPA. The rt side went in just fine but the left side was a bit stiff. I had to get a bit tricky and use a wood clamp to help apply pressure while rotating. I went with the EBC Brakes DP21789 Greenstuff 2000. Thanks for the info all!

Next time you should go with the EBC redstuff, they work much better on the R56 chassis.

I thought the red stuff would be too hard. Not the case?
