So MC2 Magazine just put out an article saying how a Custom Dyno tune is the best first mod. This is NOT true, let me explain. As you all know I do Custom ECU Tuning, and it is a great mod. It can bring the car together. When we do a custom dyno tune we measure the HP and torque the car makes with the dyno. Then by changing the programming in the ECU we adjust the fuel, timing, throttle, RPM, and few other maps to change the air fuel mixture to maximize the efficiency of your car, and this will make more power. This works well because factory settings are always on the conservative side. They do this because every engine isn't exactly the same, this is why one car will run better than the next.
Now that you understand what an ECU tune does, here is why you don't do it first. When you do a custom tune you set the parameters in the ECU to maximize how the car is at that moment in time. So if you alter the car after the tune, such as changing the pulley, head, injectors, cam and so on you WILL change the A/F ratio. Well you had already leaned it out with the tune, so now it can be leaner and that can damage the engine running too lean. So to avoid that ANYTIME you change a mod on the Engine and have a tune prior, you have to retune the ECU to ensure your not going to be too lean. And each time you retune you'll be renting the dyno which is anywhere from $100-150 hr.
So what are your options. If you want to get more from your ECU without worrying about damaging your car I offer a Quicktune. This is a quick and dirty simple map not requiring a dyno. I change a few maps to give you a few HP, and better throttle response. There is no fuel Leaning done, so you can continue modding your car without worry. This will also smooth out the power delivery, and raise the RPM limiter if you want. This is only $225.
2nd option is do ALL your engine mods first, then we do a dyno tune. This will give you the most power and torque. With dyno rental this usually is about $600, but if you have a quicktune from me prior I give you a $225 discount.
I hope this helps explain, cause everything in Magazines are just paid ads. I do offer similar options for the R56 MINI's
